At Ken-yen Learning Center, we believe that each child deserves the opportunity to learn at their fullest potential. Our personal quest is to challenge good students to become excellent by providing a non-threatening technically advanced home based curriculum.
This alternative educational model is designed to develop the spiritual, academic, and social lives of our students by focusing on Christian values, tiered level academics, small class sizes, health education and the fine arts. Our goal, along with the cooperation of caring parents, is that Ken-yen students will become exceptional citizens of the world.
Ken-yen Learning Center is a good fit for students that have a good work ethic, want to achieve excellence and love to learn. When students display these characteristics, along with personal responsibility they are allowed more freedom to work outside of the traditionally constraining learning environment, where they can strengthen their talents and peruse their interests.

Our curriculum has been chosen based on careful research and more than twenty years of teaching experience. We have found that students learn better when their assignments are both fun and meaningful. We do use books and workbooks, but they are only a small part of the whole picture. Students are engaged in hands-on-activities, projects, games, research, field trips and discussions that bring what they are learning to life. We bring the worlds of “book learning” and real life together to create a hunger for knowledge that will last a life time.
One important aspect of our curriculum is that we nudge each child to work at their fullest potential. Every student works at a level that is comfortably challenging for them. They are never stuck in an academic level because of their age or ability in other subjects. If they are in Kindergarten and read at second grade level, they will do second grade level reading assignments, even if they are still doing Kindergarten level math. Students are also expected to complete all their assignments with 100% scores. If an answer is incorrect, the student will be immediately instructed on how to fix the mistake so that the correct answer can be retained permanently in their memory.
We only accept a limited number of students. Our methodology of teaching is to do as much small group and one-on-one teaching as possible, especially in the basic subjects like reading and math. We also use peer tutoring frequently, as we have found that young children will learn quickly from an older student that is admired. It has also been proven that you learn something the best when you teach it, so both partners benefit from this strategy.

Mr. and Mrs. Kuzma have taught various grades together for more than twenty years. They began their teaching careers in public school education in Riverside, California. After teaching a few years there, they decided to start a private school in Mexico as part of their Master’s degree project in curriculum and instruction. The following year, they felt called to come to Kauai, which they discovered is their true home. Both were hired at Kahili Adventist School, where they enjoyed teaching for 12 years. When God called them to start their own home school, they jumped at the chance to follow God’s leading and provide a place for Kauai’s keiki, including their own three children, to flourish and grow spiritually, academically, and socially.
Mrs. Kuzma has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and is passionate about teaching reading. She has written her own reading program and children's books to help make the process of learning to read more fun. Language Arts, Fine Arts, and Science are what she loves to teach and plan. You can probably find her exercising in her free time, since she is also a certified Personal Trainer.
