We live with more than six billion other people on this planet, so it is very important that we are able to cohabitate peacefully and considerately. Christian values are of utmost importance when teaching children to respect others. We teach principles taught to us from the Bible, including kindness, honesty, and integrity, as well as the profound love our God has for each one of us.
Students are also taught manners and social etiquette and are able to practice these ethics through daily worship, peer interaction, role playing, and community service. Above all, we strive to create an environment where students feel safe and loved.
It is very important that the laws of health are instilled in children at an early age. When exercise and eating right becomes a habit, young people will retain this lifestyle throughout their lives. We provide daily opportunities for our students to participate in healthy activities, such as skateboarding, tennis, snorkeling, hiking, swimming, surfing, gymnastics, and games.
Snack and lunch is also a time where students can learn the value of eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Students will help by preparing the noon time meal for themselves and their classmates. They will learn to cook various recipes, as well as learn the nutritional value of the food they are preparing. No more packing lunches or snacks because they are both supplied by Ken-yen and prepared by the students.
Students will work in the garden, learning how to grow their own food that will be used as part of their lunch program. They will also learn how to take care of animals and plants that provide both food and healing.
Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, and our homes. We believe that technology-enabled project learning is an important part of education. Properly used; technology will help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy. Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals.
Research shows that when children are given the opportunity to participate in the Fine Arts, they are better able to succeed in the traditional subjects in school. We whole-heartedly agree and incorporate the fine arts in our curriculum in various forms. Students will study art and music in a variety of genres including painting, sculpting, drawing, mosaics, and modern art. Music is also an intricate part of our curriculum. Students will be exposed to a variety of musical compositions, particularly the classics.
As parents become more and more busy, it is difficult to find the time to teach their children the art of taking care of the home. Students will learn to clean thoroughly with natural cleaning products, organization skills, sewing, and simple carpentry.
Sometimes it is necessary for students to leave the classroom to really learn something. If we are studying ocean life, we’ll end up at the beach. It’s off to the Newspaper publishers to learn about publishing and to the courthouse to understand the judicial process. Many resources are used including the internet, community workers, and the environment itself.
